Trent’s Qualifications

Learn more about why I can’t wait to represent you on the Grandville School Board.

Critical Thinker

As a law school graduate and practicing attorney for the past 25 years, I have been trained to analyze available facts, evidence, observations, and arguments before forming a conclusion.  I welcome the suggestions and thoughts from those in the Grandville community who wish to support and improve our public schools. If elected, the school board will be my first public office, and I will take the position knowing that I have much to learn.

Demonstrated Leader

I am a senior partner at Miller Canfield, Michigan’s oldest law firm, where I have worked for the past 22 years.  I served as the head of Miller Canfield’s Grand Rapids office from 2011-2021. In 2017, I became the leader of the firm’s Financial Institutions and Transactions Group and continue to hold that position today.  I earned those positions through determination, hard work, and most of all, an ability to get along with different people and personalities. I will bring those qualities to my position on the school board.

Politically Independent

I am not a member of any political party.  I vote based on issues and common sense, not party affiliation.  I believe that good people exist on both sides of the aisle, and that people of varying backgrounds and beliefs can and should put aside their personal agendas and self-interests and work together to improve our public schools, support our teachers and administrators, and provide opportunities for all students.

Trusted Advisor

National, regional and local banks trust me to represent them in commercial lending transactions ranging from $1 million to $100 million.  I have been named as a top lawyer in banking in the publications Chambers USA, Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers in each of the past 10 years. In my daily work, I must stay highly organized and endure stress in order to survive. I am confident that I can handle any pressures which come with serving on the school board.

Person of Faith

I am a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in downtown Grand Rapids.  Through FUMC, I have taught Sunday School, served on various committees, and taken six mission trips to our sister church in Herradura, Cuba.  I met my wife Wendy on my first trip to Cuba in 1999, and she continues to lead our Cuba mission today.
